Color, Heat, Protein is a multimedia installation that combines archival VHS footage of Max’s 1999 elementary school presentation on dairy farming with photographs taken at the 2018 World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
Roughly half of the images were appropriated from Cowsmopolitan magazine—the official event documentarian— all others made by the artists. The photographs are edited to emulate the silver gelatin process and hung on calf-weaning nose rings in the style of drying darkroom prints.
